Internal Affairs. After the internal review is completed, the file is reviewed by Internal Affairs to determine if further review or escalation is needed. Internal Affairs oversees investigations within the department to ensure they’re thorough, compliant with policy, and free of bias, and they decide whether additional fact-finding, referral, or action is warranted. The sheriff, district commander, and legal staff each fulfill important roles, but the duty to assess whether more review is required rests with Internal Affairs.
